Ugly Love (Hoover)/Chapter 14
from the Collection âUgly Loveâ
Chapter Summary
Six years earlier, Rachel asked Miles whether they enjoyed kissing because their parents were together and they should not be involved. Miles recalled their first meeting, when both had wanted to kiss before knowing about their parents.
Rachel then wondered whether they simply liked kissing, regardless of whom they kissed. Miles told her that kissing her was what made it different, and she kissed him again.
Miles appreciated how her questions made him reconsider things. He had enjoyed kissing other girls, but only Rachel's absence caused him pain. He connected that longing with the pain of falling in love and silently reaffirmed his desire to kiss her.

âWe didnât know about our parents that day,â I explain. âYet we
still wanted to be doing this. So no, I donât think thatâs why we
like it now.â
She smiles.
âGood point,â I tell her. âI do like kissing. I donât know of
anyone who *doesnât* like it. But thereâs a difference between *this*
and simply liking to kiss.â
But when you like to kiss someone because of who she is, the
difference isnât found in the pleasure.
The difference is found in the pain you feel when youâre *not*
kissing her.
