Chapter Summary

Six years earlier, Miles and Rachel barely spoke during dinner with his father and her mother, Lisa. When the parents went outside, the two cleared the table. Miles tried to ignore Rachel but could think of nothing else.

Rachel revealed that their parents had been dating for about a year and that Lisa had moved them closer to his father. Remembering his dead mother, Miles felt betrayed. He realized Rachel knew nothing about her.

Miles approached Rachel and kissed her. Desire mixed with guilt and revenge, and he accepted that he was falling for her. They separated when Lisa returned to take Rachel home, but his attraction remained overwhelming.

Miles told his father that Lisa was nice and hid his anger. He now saw his father as fallible rather than someone with all the answers. In texts, Rachel suggested lying to their parents, and they agreed to meet at seven the next night. Miles turned off his phone after her good-night message.

Quotes

She doesn’t realize she’s everywhere. She’s in everything. Every single thing has just become Rachel.

It’s consuming me.

My thoughts aren’t thoughts anymore.

My thoughts are Rachel.

When my lips touch hers, it’s so many things. It’s good and bad and right and wrong and

  • revenge*.

She inhales, stealing some of my breaths. I breathe into her, giving her more.

Now he’s just . . . *normal.* Human.

Maybe that’s the rite of passage before you become a man— realizing your father doesn’t have life figured out any more than you do.
