Ugly Love (Hoover)/Epilogue
from the Collection “Ugly Love”
Chapter Summary
Miles remembered marrying Tate more than two years earlier. At the wedding, Corbin had expressed his approval. Miles's love for her had grown every day, although he had not cried with joy.
Eight months earlier, they had learned Tate was pregnant. Both were excited, but Miles feared that his memories would prevent him from fully loving another child.
Tate gave birth to a girl named Sam, honoring Cap's real name, Samuel. Tate cried as the nurse placed their daughter in her arms. Miles remained afraid to look at the baby.
At Tate's encouragement, Miles held Sam and looked at her. She resembled Clayton, the son he had held before, but had Tate's brown hair. Her blue eyes matched his. He felt the same love he remembered and finally cried tears of joy.
Miles recognized that Rachel had been right: pain and fear would remain, but no longer define his life. He kissed Sam and Tate, grateful for his family, and felt that their beautiful moments made the suffering of love worthwhile.

I’m afraid of what I *won’t* feel.
I’m terrified my past experiences have ruined any ability I have
to feel what every father should feel in this moment.
Rachel was right. The pain will always be there.
So will the fear.
But the pain and fear are no longer my life. They’re only
moments.
Moments that are constantly overshadowed with every minute
I spend with Tate.
I’m looking down at the perfection we created when it hits me.
It’s all worth it.
It’s the beautiful moments like these that make up for the ugly
love.
