Ugly Love (Hoover)/Chapter 35
from the Collection “Ugly Love”
Chapter Summary
Corbin took the last boxes and the key to Tate’s new place. She stayed behind to check his apartment before leaving and looked at Miles’s door across the hall.
Tate had not seen or spoken to Miles for a week. She had hoped for an apology but admitted he had never lied or broken a spoken promise. She wondered whether she had imagined his feelings for her.
After locking Corbin’s apartment, Tate knocked on Miles’s door. Ian answered sympathetically and went to get him. She searched Ian’s voice and Miles’s approaching footsteps for clues to his reaction but found none.
Tate told Miles she was leaving and wanted to say goodbye. He showed no immediate reaction. When she looked up, his expression was stoic. His brief reply, “Good-bye, Tate,” left her regretting that she had knocked.

Quotes
I’ve been selfishly hoping he would show up and apologize, but then again, what would he even be apologizing for? He never lied to me. He never verbalized promises that he broke.
The only times he wasn’t brutally honest with me were the times he didn’t speak. The times he looked at me and I assumed the feelings I saw in his eyes were more than what he was able to verbalize.
My eyes finally make the brave journey up to his. When I see the stoic look on his face, I want to step back, but I’m afraid I’ll trip over my heart.
I don’t want him to watch me fall.
